Thy Kingdom Come

When you get on your knees and say your prayers, you are used to saying saying several sentences.  One of those sentences is “Thy kingdom come“? Why do you say these words and what do they mean?

We say these words, because Jesus Christ taught his apostles to pray in Luke 11:1

Luke 11:…Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
[2] And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.  [3] Give us day by day our daily bread.  [4] And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

Many churches of our day believe that Jesus brought the kingdom when he came the first time.  They believe that the kingdom is in our hearts, or in our minds, or they believe the kingdom is already in heaven.   The fact that Jesus would say this sentence smack-dab in the middle of his ministry makes it clear that the kingdom had not already come to the earth, neither was in existence at that time.

When Jesus told his apostles to pray for the kingdom to come, he was talking about the kingdom of God, who’s beginning and characteristics were clearly described (in yellow below) by the prophet Daniel:

Daniel Chapter 2:[44] And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
[45] Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

The Kingdom is God is literal and real.  It will destroy all kingdoms of the world to become a universal dominion ruled over by the Christ, the resurrected apostles and the saints.  Righteous judgement will become a world-wide standard when the world is ruled over by incorruptable immortals.
