Abraham never actually owned the land God gave him. Since God promised him he would have it for an everlasting possession, and God cannot lie, then the promise of the land for an everlasting possession was an implied promise of resurrection and eternal life.
Genesis 23:4 I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.
1 Chronicles 16:18 Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan.. and strangers in it.
